Why learning

In the mid-nineties, whilst driving past the spoil heaps of Cornwall, Tim Smit wanted to give people a new way of looking at Cornwall from which he created the Eden Project. In the midst of its development, the heaviest rainfall for 30 years washed away 6 months of topsoil. Rather than view this as a problem, Tim viewed this as an opportunity to learn and, in doing so, developed an extraordinary eco-drainage system that will cope with any amount of rainfall. It is in getting stuck that real learning takes place leading to innovations that we sometimes hadn’t foreseen or planned for, but from which the project or organisation can grow and prosper. That’s where we come in – developing your organisation’s ability to understand and capitalise upon learning.

Why learning – because the only modern businesses that will succeed are those that recognise, at every level, obstacles and challenge are a necessary part of achievement and fulfilment.  Adversity is seen as the enemy of success – it is in fact a prerequisite.  It is only through overcoming challenge that lasting solutions are founded. In embracing a culture of learning, adversity is harnessed as a positive channel of change.

Too often teams are established to fulfil a necessary target or objective for which people with the required skills base are gathered.  However, this creates a focus of “skill to meet outcome” which can rapidly become obsolete or redundant as the organisation’s operating environment changes.  The rigidity of the structure opposes change rather than enable it.

Effective abilities within any team are essential for success, but too often teams become stagnant and immobile.  The emphasis on an individual inflexible skills base prevents the team from evolving with the environment within which it works. By developing successful intelligences within the team alongside the individuals’ skill basis a dynamic is created that can not only meet the specific need at any given time but will also respond to the changing needs of the company.

Working with us, you can develop your organisation’s ability to understand how best to exploit successful intelligence. A learning organisation enhances its capacity to anticipate, adapt to and create its own future.  Any organisation that can foretell the future has the competitive advantage and will succeed.
